Profile

Vimmi Indra completed Bachelor in Fine Arts (BFA) from the Government Institute of Fine Arts, Jabalpur. Her journey of growing up in the different towns and cities of Bihar, and later moving to the big cities is reflected in her lucid dream-like artwork. Her paintings are a fantasy world where figures float against an ever-changing environment of our cities, buildings, and nature. Her canvases pulsate with an inner rhythm and energy, glowing like jewels with colors and expressive figures. The vibrant palette and use of the soft brush technique speak of mature handling of the medium. While her earlier paintings were a union of imagination and reality in her ‘Citiscapes’ series, her new works appear like a lucid dream with simple expressive figures. The viewer is transported into a parallel universe as he/she sees visions of a lost world taking a pictorial form.
Her art practice employs a simple yet meditative approach. The minimal ornamentation and limited color palette offer art lovers intriguing possibilities for her work's interpretation. Her work is a manifestation of her daily encounter with life in the discordant social order and complexities of social intercourse. Her amicable yet mute response to engaging with society serves as a launching pad for her art practice.

Vimmi’s artwork received recognition from the Hon’ble President of India in an artists-in-residence camp held on premises of the Presidential Estate in 2019. Her work now is a part of the Hon’ble President’s Rashtrapati Bhavan art collection. Vimmi has held several solo and group art shows in India and abroad. She regularly contributes to charity and auction shows looking for ways to give back to society through her artwork. She has also curated multiple art exhibitions and camps while promoting emerging artists.
The recipient of the Utthan Samiti Award in 2018 and IBN 7’s Guru Shishya Award in 2012, with her renowned Guru Padmashri Smt. Anjolie Ela Menon, Vimmi regularly engages school students by conducting workshops and encouraging students for pursuing arts as a career course and has organized camps within the Rashtrapati Bhavan premises and various top schools in New Delhi. Her works are part of numerous public and private art collections in India and abroad. The artist lives and works in New Delhi.
